New beginnings after a busy 2015

Now that another busy year has passed and our Christmas celebrations wrapped up, January is the perfect time for self-reflection. Reflecting upon the year that’s passed will help you work out your goals for 2016, ensuring you kick off this year with enthusiasm and a positive outlook.

There’s nothing quite like end-of-year festivities with family and friends to remind us of what’s important in life. As we go about our daily routines, we sometimes lose track of what really counts—loved ones, relationships, kindness, empathy, good health, freedom of expression, opportunity and so on. It can be easy to overlook the amazing significance of simply being alive, right here, right now.

Self-reflection can give you a solid grounding of who you are, what you are grateful for, and what you want in life. This fosters an internal awareness and sense of fulfilment.

Making changes in the New Year

What are the achievements that you have made in your life to date? What are your goals as you move forward? How will you achieve them?

Many of us dedicate ourselves to new goals in the New Year by making resolutions. These can be fun and motivating, but can be difficult to maintain.

The challenge of making resolutions is half the battle. Even if your resolutions don’t work out, identifying goals for 2016 will give you clarity and purpose, helping you start the year in a positive and productive way.

A good way to create a ‘doable’ resolution is to come up with a theme for the year, rather than a specific target such as “Lose weight” or “Go to the gym”. Instead, look at a theme that could encourage these goals whole-heartedly. This could be something like, “To live a healthier life”.

Having an overarching theme will enable you to work at your resolution from many different angles—in this case, healthy eating, exercise, mindfulness etc. As opportunities arise throughout the year (e.g. a new yoga or meditation class in your area), you can take on a new activity or approach that fits your overall goal. After all, true change happens one step at a time!
