Why Tremella Might Be Your New Favourite Mushroom
I’ve been diving deep into medicinal mushrooms for a long time now, and one of my faves (though they’re all kinda my faves) is Tremella. I thought I’d share more about this beauty from nature…
Touted commonly for its anti-aging benefits, Tremella offers (like most medicinal mushrooms) an absolute bounty of beneficial health-promoting actions. Tremella moistens us internally and deeply. It lubricates our insides to keep us smooth and supple, a treat for ageing skin (including our inner skin by way of our internal membranes). It helps to lubricate lung tissues and thus our respiratory tract for example. Got a dry cough? Maybe Tremella might help!
It’s a very soft and flowy-looking mushroom, very soft, gentle and feminine — almost like translucent lace.
The Skin, Lung & UV Helper You Didn’t Expect
Tremella is photo-protective, which means it can help protect us from UV radiation and things like sunburn. It’s a connective tissue regenerator, an anti-inflammatory, it nourishes our microbiome, is an antioxidant, and so much more.
Medicinal mushrooms (and herbs) have multiple actions on our physiology. They also have more temperate and energetic properties too — such as warming, cooling or sweet, for example.
Someone who always feels the cold, for instance, often benefits from and suits more warming herbs, things like cinnamon and ginger. People who run hot can often benefit from more cooling herbs like peppermint. Tremella is considered a neutral mushroom.
Tremella takes up the flavours of the dish it is cooked in, adding none, or very little of its own flavour to the dish (or herbal tonic!).
Adaptogenic, Antioxidant, and Ageing-Well Support
We stock Tremella in various forms – liquid and powder. The powder is easily added to cooking to enhance the medicinal power of meals, including baking due to its neutrality.
Like most medicinal mushrooms, it is also considered an adaptogen. Adaptogens are akin to scaffolding for us – they help keep us strong when life gets (or stays!) demanding many things from us.
Many of the medicinal mushrooms also have anticancer properties, many are nootropic or cognition-enhancing, they can help balance things like cholesterol, help to enhance certain organs/systems (e.g. liver), and so much more. They are worth getting acquainted with if you are interested in ageing well.
If you’re curious about adding Tremella into your daily flow, start simple.
Whether it’s a spoonful in your soup, a dash in your baking, or a few drops in your morning tonic — it’s an easy, beautiful way to nourish yourself from the inside out.
