Preparing for a sauna visit: 5 tips for a blissful experience

September 27, 2023

Whether you’re a seasoned sauna enthusiast or preparing for your first sauna visit, preparation is key to maximising the benefits of sauna therapy. In this blog, we’ll guide you through our 5 essential steps to ensure a blissful and rejuvenating infrared sauna session

1. Hydration is key

Since your body loses essential minerals when it perspires, compensating for it is important both before and after your sauna experience. Begin your pre-sauna routine by drinking a sufficient amount of water to prevent dehydration. Afterwards, consider sipping on electrolyte-rich beverages or herbal teas to replenish any minerals you may have lost as you sweat those toxins out. At Saltuary, we provide you with 2 bottles of alkaline and mineralised water to enjoy during your session. If you need a third, just ask!

2. Dress for comfort

When it comes to sauna attire, less is more. Most people sauna in the nude (our saunas are private). If sharing the session with a loved one, opt for loose-fitting and lightweight clothing that allows your skin to breathe. These are much easier to put back on afterwards too! Remember, the primary goal is to allow your body to sweat freely and efficiently.

3. Don’t eat large meals beforehand

The idea is to allow your body time to detox and relax, not to get busy digesting food! A light snack/meal is fine beforehand, but aim not to eat anything large or substantial in the hour or so beforehand to maximise your sauna experience!

4. Choose from many relaxation techniques

Set aside the distractions of everyday life and embrace the rare opportunity to relax. While in the sauna, try deep breathing exercises, meditation, or visualisation techniques to amplify the therapeutic effects of the sauna. You can also double the benefits of your sauna session with tools like the Nativ Sens gua sha. As the gentle heat from the sauna penetrates deep into your muscle tissues, the added stimulation from the rhythmic movements of a gua sha instrument can boost circulation and significantly improve the benefits.

5. Don’t forget your post-sauna care

After your sauna session, take the time to cool down gradually. Enjoy a gentle walk home, relax in our comfortable waiting area or enjoy a refreshing beverage while your body returns to its normal temperature. It’s also recommended to rehydrate and refuel your body with nutritious foods after your sauna experience.

Following these five steps can ensure that your sauna visit can be an uplifting and transformative experience. From hydrating adequately before, during and after your visit to choosing suitable clothing, proper preparation can help you reap the full benefits of infrared sauna therapy.

Remember, self-care is one of the pillars of modern wellness and the sauna visit is quickly becoming the go-to for those seeking to carve out some time for themselves in a busy and demanding world. Stepping into a sauna no longer needs to be daunting when you’re well-prepared and ready to embrace its blissful warmth as it revives your mind, body, and spirit
