More Australians than ever are reporting on the impacts of stress in their daily lives.

– 14.4% of the population aged 16 – 85 have an anxiety disorder
– 73% of the population report daily stress in their lives
– Tension headaches account for 80% of all headaches

Our ability to cope with stress is highly individual. It impacts our lives and health in a variety of ways from insomnia, to nervous tension, to fatigue and exhaustion or even hormonal imbalance.

When it comes to stress, a few ‘core’ nutrients to keep in mind are the B vitamins and Magnesium. Both of these are critical to a healthy stress response and both can easily become depleted with stress. Magnesium is actually dubbed ‘the anti stress mineral’!

Where calcium ‘contracts’, magnesium allows everything to go ‘aaaahhhhh’ and relax.. This is one reason why our floats are so relaxing, they contain hundreds of kilos of Epsom salt which your body absorbs. Epsom salt just happens to be VERY rich in magnesium! So floating may just be the kiss of death for stress!

When it comes to chronic stress, I would not go without supplementation. For every day smaller stressors though, getting enough of these nutrients through food should help. Foods high in B vitamins include Brewers yeast and other yeast spreads, eggs, some nuts, sesame and sunflower seeds, wheatgerm and many others. Foods high in magnesium are the green leafy veggies – the darker the green, the better. Also, sesame and sunflower seeds (again!), some nuts (almonds, brazils, cashews and hazelnuts, etc) and of course, CHOCOLATE! But – I’m taking the real chocolate here – dark, cacao based chocolate. I believe Saltuary stock a range of amazing ones 🙂

There are many different herbs that are amazing for stress too, with Kava, Passionflower, Withania and Oats being some of my favourites. I’m more than happy to make up herbal mixes for people – just come in and see me.

You can accuse me of being biased, I’m quite ok with that, but I will add that its not just the floats at Saltuary that are good for stress. Every single therapy we offer can help with stress. Depending on how much you are wanting to treat it – everything from an in-depth Naturopathic consultation, to a relaxing facial to a stress busting massage can help.

Personally, I take supplemental magnesium, B vitamins, CoQ10 and a herbal mix to counteract the stress in my own life. I also try my best to enjoy a relaxing therapy every week, to laugh with my children and connect with nature.
