Sinusitis – part 1

October 11, 2013

Our sinuses are connected networks of hollow spaces within the skull. The largest sinuses are located in the cheekbones but there are also some located above our eyebrows and between the eyes. Except for a very thin layer of mucous, our sinuses are typically empty spaces filled with air.

When the mucosa or tissues lining the sinuses become inflamed and/or infected, the sinuses fill up with mucous and fluid which causes them to become blocked and creates a breeding ground for germs to grow and multiply. This condition is called Sinusitis.

Sinusitis is commonly caused by allergies, upper respiratory tract bacterial or viral infections and trauma. Other things that can predispose an individual to developing sinusitis include nasal structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum, cigarette smoke, frequent colds and flu, unmanaged hayfever, nasal polyps, frequent usage of nasal decongestant sprays and untreated dental problems.

In Australia, sinusitis is highly prevalent. It is estimated that about 10% of the population is affected by this condition making it comparable to asthma. Interestingly, sinusitis affects more women than men with a higher incidence for those between the ages of 45-54.

Common signs and symptoms include:
• Pain and congestion in the sinus areas
• Facial pain and swelling
• Fever
• Headache
• Earache
• Blocked nose
• Nasal discharge
• Coughing
• Tooth pain located in the upper jaw

An easy way to determine if you have sinusitis is by tapping or pressing down on the areas where the sinuses are located – forehead above the eyes, bridge of the nose between the eyes and the cheekbones. If these areas feel painful or tender to touch, then odds are that your sinuses are blocked and infected.

Doctors will typically prescribe antibiotics to people who have sinusitis. At Saltuary, we have a team of qualified health practitioners who can assist you in managing sinusitis symptoms naturally. We have a range of ready-to-go supplements, including a nasal spray with essential oils. We also have a range of specific, individual nutrients including zinc, that may help. Before prescribing zinc, we do a quick and easy taste test to ascertain your level of this important nutrient. Our zinc test takes only a few minutes and costs $10. We can also mix up individual herbal medicine tonics to target your specific symptoms. If you are interested, please pop in store for a chat or call 9713 8688 to make an appointment to look at your natural health options.

Stay tuned for my next blog, which will be on the benefits of salt therapy and how it can be used to help sinusitis.

Wishing you abundant health,
