Relaxation is a Healthcare Essential…..Time to make it a priority!

Relaxation a part of your wellness plan

No longer is relaxation simply a luxury, it is now a health care essential if you wish to maintain good health and wellbeing.

Most of us expect a lot from our body, mind & spirit, so it’s critical to schedule in time for relaxation. It sounds somewhat ironic to use the words ‘relaxation’ and ‘schedule’ in the same sentence, but with our modern day busy lives, it really needs to be up there with the other every-day priorities such as shopping, cleaning, etc.

Stress affects all of us, and in the short term,  it can actually have positive effects, something known as ‘eustress’. An example of eustress is exercise. By pushing ourselves physically, we become stronger, more resilient etc. I’m sure we all know, that stress can also be the complete opposite of that too. Our adrenal glands are largely responsible for how well we deal with stress. If they are nourished and healthy, we can bounce stress off relatively well. If they’re strung out from a constant struggle with stress, then bouncing stress off becomes quite challenging.

Effects of Stress

Some of the effects of ongoing stress include:

  • Difficulty getting up in the morning
  • Fatigue and tiredness not relieved by sleep
  • Craving salty or sugary foods
  • Increased PMS symptoms
  • Mild depression, a lack of joy in the every day
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Longer recovery times from illness and injury
  • Feeling wired and tired, etc

If you suffer any of these on a somewhat regular basis – you are walking your way towards adrenal fatigue. Taking time out relax is one strategy you should employ to guard against stress, or even worse, total body burnout.

Stress was originally designed as a protective response. In the early days of our existence, the effects of stress enabled us to ‘fight, or take flight’ from stressors that endangered our lives. The difference was, that generally, such stresses were short lived, and the body quickly reset back to its balanced (‘homeostatic’) way of being and life went on happily. These days, our stress tends not to stop – the off switch has broken, leaving most of us wearing the damaging effects of long term, chronic stress.

If you suffer any of the symptoms above, the sooner you can begin taking time out to rejuvenate your body and mind, the better. When we are stressed, we think the last thing we can do is stop, but believe me, it is THE best thing you can do. Not only will you function more efficiently on the other side of your ‘time out’, but you will give your body the reassurance that ‘things will be ok’, helping it to turn the tide back into happier waters once more.
