Pneumonia Prevention

Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria or a virus, such as colds and flu. Anyone can contract pneumonia, but young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable. As winter approaches, it’s important to keep your immune system healthy. Salt Therapy gives you a revitalising mineral and immunity boost!

We’ve all experienced the stuffy nose, sore throat, chesty cough and general “blergh” feeling associated with the common cold or flu. Our bodies are particularly vulnerable during the onset of winter, as we adjust to the changing climate. When bad bacteria or a virus enters our body, our immune system kicks in, fighting off the intruder. But what happens when our immune system runs out of gusto? Pneumonia can occur with weakened immunity— especially in the aftermath of colds and flu. So be proactive— boost your immunity before the winter season!

Pneumonia: What do I look for?

• High fever
• Fast &/or difficult breathing & coughing
• Pain in the chest (especially when coughing)
• Vomiting
• Fatigue/irritability
• Abdominal aches or pain

How can I prevent it?

Basic hygiene practices, healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle all help prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses such as colds, flu and pneumonia. Demonstrate the correct hand-washing procedure to your children, using soap and water. Cover your mouth with a disposable tissue when sneezing or coughing, then wash your hands or use a natural hand sanitiser. It may sound like common sense, but it’s particularly important to teach children about good hygiene practices. It’s also very important to use a natural hand sanitiser, ensuring you are not killing off the beneficial bacteria on your skin! You can buy these at Saltuary 🙂

And remember— eat a varied diet and drink more pure water! You may not feel as thirsty in the colder months, but it’s important to keep your body hydrated. Get plenty of sleep (the average adult needs 8 hours; the average young child 12 hours; the average older child 10 hours) and moderate exercise (6 times a week for children; around 3-4 times a week for adults).
