Sinusitis and Salt Therapy

October 12, 2013

Our sinuses are important as they serve as the first line of defence in protecting our lungs from infection.

There are four different types of sinusitis and they are:

  • Acute sinusitis: Generally lasts from 2 to 4 weeks and occurs suddenly. Most people initially think that they have a cold except that symptoms do not improve after a week.
  • Subacute sinusitis: When the sinuses have been inflamed for about a 4 – 8 week period
  • Chronic sinusitis: When symptoms have been present for longer than 8 weeks
  • Recurring sinusitis: When an individual experiences symptoms multiple times in a year

No matter which form of sinusitis you have, salt therapy sessions can help. Salt therapy has been utilised in Europe for many decades mainly in the form of salt mines. In Australia, salt therapy has only become available in recent years but its effectiveness and popularity as a healing therapy is quickly catching on.

Instead of salt mines, Saltuary has two beautiful salt rooms constructed from many tonnes of pure Himalayan salt. A machine called a halogenerator disperses finely crushed salt particles into the air. Breathing in this salty mist can benefit many health conditions, including sinusitis, and promote general health and well-being.

Salt therapy is effective in managing conditions of the skin such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It is also extremely beneficial for respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, croup, pneumonia, hay fever, coughing, and of course sinusitis.

For sinusitis and other respiratory-related conditions, salt therapy works by clearing away excess mucous or discharge as well as reducing inflammation in the sinuses and airways. This allows people to breathe a lot easier and will relieve the congestion and pain caused by sinusitis. Additionally, salt is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, which may reduce the chances of people developing secondary infections. Himalayan salt therapy, such as that offered here at Saltuary, can also help to boost your immune system due to all the trace minerals in the salt itself.

Salt therapy is also a very lovely way to de-stress, and relax and can help alleviate anxiety. Himalayan salt emits negative ions into the air, giving you an additional benefit when using our salt rooms. Negative ions are naturally abundant in places such as the rainforest and the beach. They are believed to stimulate serotonin release in the body, helping people feel calm and relaxed.

High levels of stress for prolonged periods of time can have a very detrimental effect on our nervous system and lower our immunity. Therefore anything that effectively minimises stress and anxiety is a great support when it comes to managing conditions such as sinusitis.

A very satisfied customer recently wrote that salt therapy “…is a unique and effective treatment which can be fitted into anyone’s busy lifestyle – gives the body and mind a chance to stop and regenerate…”. We’ve had numerous success stories of people with sinusitis, both chronic and acute since we opened our doors 6 months ago. People have reported decreased pain/pressure in their sinuses, clearing of excess mucous, easier breathing, decreased symptoms and longer periods of respite.

In my next blog, I will discuss some useful dietary and lifestyle tips that can be implemented to relieve sinusitis symptoms.

In health and happiness,
Amy Huynh
