Acupuncture is an ancient and therapeutic form of healing, dating back thousands of years to China and other Eastern countries. Despite its rich history, acupuncture has only recently become accepted as “the real deal” by modern medicine and mainstream society. Read on to find out about acupuncture demystified!

What is acupuncture?
There has long been scepticism about acupuncture in the West. After all, how can tiny needle pinpricks on pressure points benefit and heal the human body? Plus, needles are painful, right? Luckily, acupuncture is not so simple (or painful)!

Firstly, acupuncture isn’t designed to be a painful experience! The needles are so fine that most people scarcely feel them at all. According to Lisa Ogden, Saltuary’s resident acupuncturist, “People really relax during sessions, and sometimes fall asleep.”

Secondly, acupuncture relies upon the unification of mind, body, spirit and energy. Acupuncturists carefully position needles on pressure points to stimulate the flow of energy, or ‘Qi’. According to Chinese philosophy, Qi is the body’s motivating energy, which moves through channels beneath the skin. Qi results in a balanced state of being— but when channels become blocked by stress or trauma, illness can result.

What does it treat?
Acupuncture is helpful for a variety of acute and chronic conditions. Acupuncture can help treat injuries such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and ankle injuries, accelerating the natural healing process.

“I see people…if they’re suffering from any pain, people with digestive complaints, people who are just tired and not quite themselves…and also women who are wanting to get pregnant,” explains Lisa.

Ongoing acupuncture is excellent for chronic conditions, such as migraines and headaches, arthritis, back pain, neck and shoulder discomfit, tendonitis, asthma, high blood pressure, poor circulation, painful periods, skin conditions…and many others!

Some people try acupuncture for mental health reasons, seeking out therapeutic alternatives for stress, depression, anxiety, or just feeling “not quite right”.

“People come in to deal with things like stress and anxiety…if they’re having trouble sleeping…I see people from as young as six weeks old to people in their ripe old age,” says Lisa.

Regardless of your age and particular health issue, acupuncture is an ancient healing practice beneficial to everyone! It can be used as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with other natural therapies and/or conventional medicine.

“[When] people are undergoing traditional treatments…then they come and have acupuncture to help support them…work with the body to make sure that it’s working at its optimum potential,” explains Lisa.
