Chasing stress symptoms that seemingly have no link…?

Stress Symptoms and your nervous system

As we approach the end of the year, most people feel overwhelmed, anxious and stressed out. We start to feel various symptoms that we don’t relate to stress. Most of us probably don’t think to seek a Chiropractor to help with this, but that’s exactly what our Chiropractor (Mark Uren) specialises in!

Your brain and nervous system control everything in your body, from your heart beat and digestion to how tight or relaxed your muscles (and therefore ‘you’!) feel.

Your nervous system is made up of different parts and the part of your nervous system that controls things like your internal organs and blood vessels is called the Autonomic Nervous System.

The Autonomic Nervous System is broken into 2 parts – the Sympathetic and the Parasympathetic systems.

Sympathetic Dominance

Akin to a see-saw, these 2 parts should act to balance each other. However, when the Sympathetic side is more dominant, you are in a state known as “Fight or Flight”. This state is called ‘Sympathetic Dominance’, or SD for short.

In this state, your body responds (symptoms) as if it is literally running for its life, away from the jaws of a lion or dinosaur. Mentally, of course, you know there are no dinosaurs, but your body instinctively still acts as if there are.

In this wound-up state your body undergoes physical changes (symptoms) including increased blood pressure and blood sugar; your heart rate increases; you sweat more; blood flow decreases to your internal organs like your stomach; your shoulders tighten, consequently finding yourself in the all too familiar state of ‘stress’?

You may not be consciously aware of all these changes, but you will experience the overall effect of SD as ‘stress’. Symptoms such as headaches, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, anxiety, gallbladder dysfunction, and more are all linked. These are all symptoms of a wound-up body, furthermore a body experiencing Sympathetic Dominance.
